Iran: Trend in Research O8

Koocheki, A.

College of Agriculture, Ferdowsi University, Mashhad, 91775 - 1163, Iran

Research conducted between 1984 - 1992 by the Research Organization of Ministry of Agriculture was evaluated on the basis of sustainablility. Four main groups: Pests, diseases and weeds; plant improvement and breeding; soil and water; and forest and range were considered. Total number of research in each group for each year and also the percent of cases related to sustainability was calculated. Total number of research conducted was 1677 for pests, diseases and weeds; 47.8% of which was based on sustainability. 5966 for plant breeding with 18.2% on sustainabilty, 2370 for soil and water with 9.7% on sustainability and 722 for forest and range with 51.8% on sustainbility.
However, in recent years this trend seems to be accelerating. After disintegration of Ministry of Jahad Sazendgi from the Minsitry of Agriculture, management of natural resources was alocated to the former. However, this seems not to be working as expected, therefore, a comperhensive evaluation is needed.
