Greek producers take into account the social economic changes, the positive elasticities of the consumer's income and the 2092/91 regulation of Ministry of Agriculture for support of the organic production of agricultural products and foodstuffs exploit, on barren and non productive areas (islands, in mountainous and hilly areas). Up to date there are three non govermental companies which have taken licences (SOYE, DIO, Phisiologiki S.P.E.).
In Greece 445 producers are registered on organic produce (1995), who cultivate 1355 ha of land, 0.034% of the total agriculture land, full organic (322,77 ha), in conversion (902,55 ha), without indication (129,55 ha). The organic farming land is located mainly in Southern - Central Greece (947 ha) and islands (595,1 ha). Northern Greece - Makedonia (53,6 ha) and Thrace (146 ha) do not present a comperatively special activity on this project. Experimental trials on vegetables (tomatoes) by Research Center of Makedonia and Thrace are at the beginning of cultivation and economic estimation.
Because of the limited production of organic products, marketing does not exist as an organized distribution network. The few products, of full organic such, olive trees (229,7 ha), wineyards for wine (1,3 ha), black currants (15,85 ha), cotton (2,5 ha), citrus (13,5 ha), vegetables (10,66 ha), other fruit (5,0 ha), nut trees (2,3 ha), kiwis (1,2 ha), fig trees (4,1 ha), cereals (26,5 ha), legumes (1,5 ha), aromatic and pharmaceutical plants (1,2 ha), industrial tomato (1,9 ha), floriculture (0,6 ha) and set aside (4,8 ha) are mainly distributed by the producers themselves directly or through open markets to the final consumers and prices fluctuated between the prices of the conventional and up to 20% higher.
Exports of certain products are made to Northern Europe (Holland, Germany) but not in an organized market. Imports are made mainly of processed organic food products by whole salers who distribute these products via healthy products stores to the consumers.
