The organic farming method has economic and environmental advantages in comparison with conventional farming method. As the price of organic vegetable products is only about 30-50% higher than conventional products, urban consumers are now going to buy organic vegetable products in Korea. One per cent increase in the application of chemical fertilizers in spring cabbage decrease the income of cabbage by 0.97% as shown by the analysis of Cobb-Douglas production-function during 1979-94 years data. Consequently, the increasing application of pesticide may not help at all to increase level of income in spring cabbage production.
The quality of drinking water is a serious problem in the larger cities in Korea at present. The Korean government is going to reduce pesticide use by 50% and chemical fertilizer use by 40% in the future. Organic farming method can certainly contribute to improve the quality of soil, water and food as well as status of health of producers and consumers.
